Whistlers Inwards Dry Out Country

On our terminal total 24-hour interval inwards Austin, my married adult woman together with I took a hike along the Slaughter Creek Trail, inwards the southwest Metro Area.  Once again, nosotros were at the border of the Hill Country, hiking through semiarid grasslands together with counting on groves of oak together with juniper to supply about protection from the brilliant March sun.

After most ninety minutes of enduring oestrus together with dryness, nosotros came to a secluded pond, where a quartet of ring-necked ducks pigeon for their lunch; to our pleasant surprise, at that topographic point was also a trio of black-bellied whistling ducks, lounging along the shore.  Permanent residents of Mexico, southern Arizona, South Texas together with South Florida, these colorful birds also nest throughout Eastern Texas together with may wander further northward during the summertime months.

Lanky, slender ducks, they are easily identified past times their dark belly, white wing-patches together with brilliant pink-orange bill.  They nest primarily inwards tree cavities close H2O together with feed on both aquatic together with terrestrial insects together with plants.  While I bring encountered them inwards Florida over the years, I had non seen black-bellied whistling ducks inwards several years together with was peculiarly surprised to respect them inwards the semiarid landscape westward of Austin.
